Fascial Stretching

What is Fascia?

Often when we think of strength, flexibility or physical tension, we think of muscles.  However, it is the fascia that is mostly responsible for the shape of our bodies and how they are held together.

Fascia is the protective layer of connective tissue that surrounds all the muscles, bones and organs of the body in a three-dimensional web. Fascia plays a different role than our muscles, which is why it needs a different type of stretch. Stretching fascia is like stretching a plastic bag; it needs consistent pressure to change shape and unlike muscles, it does not snap back once the pressure is released.

Fascial Stretches are Simple

Fascial stretches are simple, targeted and held for an extended period of time (3 minutes or more), catalyzing changes that can be felt immediately.

By actively stretching and strengthening the fascia, we allow for more space in the joints and the muscles have more freedom to move.

Benefits of Fascial Stretching include:

  • Greater flexibility and range of motion
  • Improved posture and circulation
  • Increased balance and symmetry in your body
  • Relief from pain and stiffness
  • Better sleep and faster recovery

All Ages and Abilities Will Benefit

Fascial Stretching and Strengthening is perfect for anyone who wants to experience more quality of movement, vitality, and freedom. Whether you want to get more from your yoga practice, improve your posture, relieve pain, reach a new fitness goal, or simply feel better – all ages and abilities will benefit.

Actively Transform Your Body

Your body is a three-dimensional web of connective tissue (fascia).  Embedded within this web are all your muscles, bones, organs, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels and nerves.  Its function is to support, protect, separate and connect all these different aspects of your internal space. It not only coordinates movement across functional lines, it also helps to lubricate the muscles and cells of your body.  Fascia – not muscles – hold posture. It gives muscles their shape and the body its structure.

Because of its unique role in supporting and protecting our body, fascia has more plasticity than elasticity.  This means it responds mostly to slow, consistent and persistent movement.

Applying my decades of movement study, I have designed a series of unique fascial stretches that will decompress the joints of the body, correct common postural issues, lengthen, and strengthen your body.  These stretches are simple, targeted and held for an extended period of time, catalyzing changes that can be felt immediately.

Whether you want to improve your posture, relieve pain, reach a new fitness goal, or simply feel better – classes are perfect for all ages and abilities.

I came to Layna in great pain. I came to her as a therapist, and she has been the one person out of chiropractors, doctors, and therapists – all the people that I went to get help – that has helped me.
I have been able to do so much more since I have been able to come to Layna’s stretch classes.
The amount of movement that I have as opposed to what my other 66-year-old friends are amazing.
I credit that to this class.
I hope you enjoy it, and I hope it works for you as well as it has for me.

— Brenda C., Sedona

I have been doing yoga, dance, and all kinds of things for a very long time. The thing that has made the most difference in my body is Layna and her experience and her expertise.

She was a professional dancer before, so she understands movement, has experience – not just as knowledge.

What she provides is miraculous. My lower back pain, my knee pain, all has gone away because of Layna. As I practice my body opens up and my movement is more fluid and more graceful and I am more comfortable in my body.

Everything Layna does is such a blessing and I am so happy to have met her.
